Atrial Fibrillation (A Fib)—a type of heart rhythm disorder that affects the electrical system, or “wiring,” of the heart muscle—is often referred to as the “silent killer,” and can suddenly trigger a massive, debilitating stroke or even death. During September—National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month—physicians at the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center are working to raise awareness about life-changing treatment options, and even cures, for this potentially fatal condition.

On June 23, 2010, St. David’s South Austin Medical Center became the first hospital in Austin to use the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System for a thoracic (chest) procedure. The da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System was used to perform a thymectomy, which is a surgical procedure in which the thymus gland—located in the chest—is removed.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center is the only hospital in Central Texas utilizing a new, technologically advanced surgical procedure that customizes knee replacements. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, approximately 270,000 knee replacement operations are performed each year. With this new surgical technology, patients will have a more fitted implant, which may extend the life of knee implants.

In May, Hansen Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq: HNSN) announced that it has received conditional Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) authorizing a clinical trial to investigate use of the Sensei® X Robotic Catheter System and the Artisan™ Control Catheter for treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). The first case in the ARTISAN AF Trial, a pivotal clinical trial using the Sensei X system for the treatment of AF, was completed May 11, 2010, by G. Joseph Gallinghouse, M.D., electrophysiologist at the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute (TCAI) at St. David’s Medical Center. Principal Investigators of the trial are Andrea Natale, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.H.R.S., executive medical director for TCAI, and Gallinghouse.

In September 2009, physicians at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare performed a life-changing procedure on 67-year-old Judy Garner after she was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN). According to the National Institutes of Health, TN is a chronic pain condition that causes extreme, sporadic, sudden burning or shock-like face pain. The pain usually lasts for a few seconds, but can last up to a minute or two per episode.

On Monday, November 30, 2009, doctors at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David's HealthCare removed a medulloblastoma—a highly malignant brain tumor—from 22-year-old Charlotte Brandt.
According to the American Brain Tumor Association, medulloblastoma is a rapidly-growing tumor of the cerebellum—the lower, rear portion of the brain. This area controls balance, posture and complex motor functions such as speech and balance. Medulloblastoma is rare in adults, and seen even less frequently among women. Only about one-third of all medulloblastomas diagnosed in the United States are found in adults between the ages of 20 and 44.

St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital hosted a celebration commemorating its 20th anniversary. Patients who had suffered severe injuries or loss of function due to medical conditions had the chance to reunite with the doctors, nurses and therapists who helped them regain full or partial function.

On Friday, October 23, 2009, a 34-foot long “am-bus” will be on display at St. David's South Austin Hospital. The “am-bus,” a bus outfitted as an ambulance, is owned by American Medical Response (AMR)—one of several ambulance companies that St. David's South Austin Hospital partners with. The “am-bus” is used during incidents that injure or sicken numerous people or require relocating a large group of patients to a medical facility.

In recognition of September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, St. David's HealthCare will offer free prostate cancer screenings for men over the age of 40. The screenings will consist of a PSA blood test and rectal exam.
